Independence from Government

Dear Tobie,

Your birthday is fast approaching. After it passes, you should write and tell me what you got. July is one of my favorite months because that’s when we declared our independence from Great Britain. But did you know, the Continental Congress actually declared independence on July 2nd, not July 4th.

July 4th is the day that we commemorate our independence from government. However, every year, many will celebrate while remaining dependent on government. Government dependency can come in several forms, but the most popular are welfare programs and the Social Security program. Those dependent on government have nothing to celebrate.

Those who are independent know how to govern themselves. They’re responsible and pay for what they want. If they can’t afford it, they’ll sacrifice and do without. They make their own decisions, and will either reap the rewards or bear the consequences of their decision. They’re not spoon-fed with government hand-outs.

It’s tragic that the majority of people in America have nothing to celebrate. I look forward to the day when we can be reunited again. That day will be worth commemorating. I love you and hope to hear from you soon.

Love,
Dad
